After reading this great IGN article (and some of the nasty comments people post about the big N) I felt there were many more things that Nintendo could do to "save" the Wii.
First of all I do not think the Wii needs to be saved becuase I think it's crap, or that it's recent decline in sales will mean it will loose to the PS3/XBOX360 in sales any time soon. For me saving the Wii means futher expanding it's market share (even if it seems everyone owns a Wii nowadays) and keep all gamers interested. Becuase while casual gamers and families have there fair share of quality games, there's a lot of people who wouldn't consider it (yes, the so called hardcore gamer).
Lacking Genres
In general games of all genres are present on the Wii, although most of them are out numbered by party and family games. But there are some which are seriously lacking in quality. Most notable of these is the racing genre. And I don't mean the Mario Kart copy cats and wanna-bes; there are enough of those already. I'm referring to the Need fo Speed, Ridge Racer and Burnout sort of games. Which although not lacking in numbers, lack in quality. Seriously lack in quality. The last half decent racing game was Need for Speed Nitro on 2009. Beat-em-ups too seem to be forgotten by the large publishers. Where are Street Fighter IV, Mortal Kombat vs DC Comics and Marvel vs Capcom 3? I understand processing power being an issue, but I can't see how covering as many platforms as possible as not being advantageous to a publisher. Another great missing genre is the third person action-adventure. With games like Grand Theft Auto, God of War, Vanquish, Encharted, Bayonetta and Darksiders on other platforms, violent hungry hardcore gamers are left with only Mad World and No More Heroes. Another genre is the first person shooters? We loved Goldeneye and Call of Duty: Black Ops, we're waiting for Conduit 2. Give us more!
Classic Controller Support
Monster Hunter Tri got it right. Goldeneye got it right. It's time Nintendo understood there is still a large proportion of the gaming population, hardcore or not, which will always be more comfortable playing with a classic controller than remote and nunchuck. It's a fact which will never go away. And although motion controls are not a fad, it does not fit everywhere. Party and family games yes, driving simulations no, beat-ups no, multiplayer FPS probably not. More games need to have support for the controller and the Wii should come bundled with at least one as well.
Budget AAA Games
The XBOX360 has the classics, the PS3 has platinum games, the Wii NOTHING. Everyone buying a wii will have to shell out full price for great games that are now 3, 4 or even 5 years old. I mean Zelda Twilight Princess still costs £33 after four years. If you look at most of the best games for the Wii (some underperfomers in the sales) are from the beginning of the console life time (Resident Evil 4, Metroid Prime Corruption, Zak & Wiki, Super Paper Mario, Fire Emblem etc).
Price Drop
Yes I said it. The world really needs to see a drop, quite heavily, in the price of admission for the Wii. Like I said above for games there are still a niche of hardcore gamers who haven't played the great yet few hardcore games available on the Wii, mostly because they already own a PS3/XBOX360/PC and a plethora of violent, strategic or action packed games.
So to sum up, and if you didn't get what I'm suggesting to, is that although Nintendo have continously managed to outdo itself in growing the population of gamers through the NDS and Wii, it left out the serious spenders, aka the hardcore gamers. This large portion of the population which will always exist and they have been neglected on the poor Wii.
